Rutgers' Paige named Big East Defensive Player of the Week

Piscataway, NJ - Rutgers goalie Erika Paige was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Teammate Katie Batiuk earned a place on the conference's weekly honor roll after No. 17 Rutgers (12-3, 3-2) defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 8-7, on April 21. With the win, the Scarlet Knights secured the No. 3 seed in upcoming BIG EAST tournament, which begins on Friday, April 27, in Syracuse, N.Y.

The BIG EAST honor is the first of Paige's career. The rookie played a key role in RU's win over the Irish, holding Notre Dame to just three second-half goals, including a scoreless stretch over the final eight minutes of the game. She finished the game with 12 saves and allowed just seven goals. Paige has now started the previous four contests for the Scarlet Knights and seen in action in 13 of 15 games.

A multilingual school system

As the county becomes more diverse, the school system has adjusted by including other languages, such as Spanish, Lao, Khmer (otherwise known as Cambodian) and Vietnamese. The system's enrollment center also offers registration forms and brochures in those same languages. The goal is to promote diversity, but also give parents the ability to speak with the school system, regardless of what language they use."I think [the growing diversity] is a wonderful thing," said Chantal Normil, director of Second Language Learning. "Cultural competency, that's the term we use now, is not just about immigrant families."It's about diversity in various settings, such as the workplace and the classroom. It's also learning about the cultures and customs of those around us."There are over 52,000 students in Clayton County schools, 8,454 of which are bilingual, Normil said.

Kids test-drive new sand sculpture kit

A gadget created in Wales looks set to transform sandcastle making forever. Rin Simpson took five creative kids to Barry Island's Whitmore Bay beach to see what they made of it

A SANDY beach without a bucket and spade is like fish without chips, spring without daffodils, Charlotte without Gavin.

Until you discover Castle King and realise there is so much more that can be done with sand if you think outside the bucket, so to speak.

Which is exactly what product developer Chris Starey did when he watched professional sand sculptors at work and wondered what their secret was.

"We looked at these professional sand sculptors and asked ourselves 'how can they do that and I can't?'," he said.

Iraqi beheadings, suicide attacks inspire Taliban

KABUL: A blindfolded man beheaded on video, a dozen kidnappings in a month and near-daily suicide attacks: Afghanistan faces brutal new Taliban tactics that are partly inspired by Iraqi insurgents, experts say, but a direct link remains hard to prove.

The Taliban themselves admit their goal is to spread terror. We behead one as a lesson for others - its more effective and creates more fear in the hearts of our enemies, spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi told AFP. But the fundamentalist movement that sprang from the backward southern province of Kandahar in the mid 1990s and was ousted by US-led forces in 2001 has become increasingly sophisticated in recent months, analysts say.

There is no direct link with Iraq but the Taliban are influenced by Al-Qaeda there, said Pakistan-based analyst and retired army general Talat Masood.
