The Final Patient

Made for less than half a million dollars, The Final Patient boasts an impressive star performance by veteran character actor Cobbs and will remain in viewers' memories long after bigger-budgeted, effects-laden genre offerings are forgotten. Creepy and low-key, this thriller really gets under the skin.

Shelf Talk: Although it didn't get theatrical distribution, Final Patient did pretty well on the film-festival circuit. It won the 2006 Screencraft Award at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. And at the Trenton Film Festival, director Jerry Mainardi and star Cobbs won top honors for their respective work. Echo Bridge hopes to generate buzz by plugging the flick aggressively on major horror-themed Web sites, and the company promises an extensive PR campaign to reach potential renters beyond the circle of genre buffs.

Don’t call child-care professionals baby sitters

ONCE a year, formal time is given in April to thank professionals who care for and educate the youngest children in West Virginia. The event, the Week of the Young Child, is April 22 to 28. The annual celebration is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the worlds largest early childhood education association.

I have personal reasons three to be exact for taking time to thank the professional caregivers for the work they do. The three reasons are simple Megan, Marcus and Max my children. Since my children have been old enough to sit up, I have had them in child care.

As I watched my daughter, then 18 months old, walk into the classroom for the first time, I knew I wasnt going to be able to leave her. She immediately gave me a wave goodbye, but I was the one having separation issues.

Not just for boys

Like the Persians on their way to Thermopylae in the Frank Miller work 300, the graphic novel is on the march.

The genre, long a hit in Europe and Asia, is finally being embraced in the United States.

Some evidence:

• Last year, U.S. sales of graphic novels reached $330 million, or four times the results for 2001. At the same time, U.S. sales outpaced those for comic books by $20 million -- thanks in part to blockbusters such as 300 and the graphic adaptation by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon of The 9/11 Commission Report.

• The concept was given prominence in a successful new TV series: Heroes, an NBC drama that maintains a graphic-novel component online.

• This year, for the first time, the American Library Association bestowed its Printz Award for excellence in young-adult literature on a graphic novel, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang.

Miranda S-250 Travel Guitar

From an early age, I wanted to learn to play the guitar. I took a few lessons here and there through the years, but for the most part taught myself from books and tapes. I never was a very good player, but that hasn't stopped my love of the instrument and music. I've had several guitars, from electric to acoustic, to even a mini electric that I built myself using a kit. I even had a dial up BBS back in the day completely devoted to TAB (tablature files) that was named CrossRoads BBS.

I haven't made time to play for years and years, but just recently decided to try to revive the desire. What better way to do that, then to buy a new guitar! I didn't want or need another regular acoustic since I already have a very nice small bodied Collings. I didn't want an electric because I don't have an amp.
