School Notes

Wednesday was Banana Day at West Chester University, with volunteers handing out thousands of - what else? - bananas to people across the campus.

Stands were set up at four sites on campus where people handed out bananas, talked bananas, and set up banana games (banana eating races, singing banana-theme songs, etc.)

The whole day is the brainchild of Rodolfo Tellez , a 1996 WCU alumnus and a resident assistant, to distribute a healthy snack to WCU students.

Aramark led a host of sponsors, many of them WCU organizations, in helping provide the 10,000 bananas for Banana Day, now in its 11th year.

From Haiku to the Blues

I'm doing a long essay, “From Haiku to the Blues," because I began to talk about the connection between the two. People say, “Ah, the haiku, you capture this great image, like the sun is setting or the sun is coming up," but the thing about the haiku is always the other side of that brightness. There's darkness there. When the sun sets you have also what happens in the night, what happens on the other side of the haiku. I think Rilke says, “After beauty comes terror." And the same thing happens with the blues.

I want to let people see the connection between that form and the people who invented it. I think that form has a lot to do with staying alive. When the Japanese were incarcerated in concentration camps, in order to survive they wrote the haiku. The whole idea of beauty and horror at the same time occurs in the haiku…the haiku is a discipline about living.

Chinese language is on the rise

American students have been learning to say "hola" and "bonjour" for years now, but lately, more and more of them are learning to say "ni hao."

An interest to learn Chinese has surged in the United States as China has risen as a global and economic power. In 2000, there were about 5,000 students studying Mandarin Chinese in U.S. public schools, according to the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Now that number is between 30,000 and 50,000, leaving states and districts scrambling to find enough qualified teachers.

The College Board, which administers college-related exams, will debut an Advanced Placement (AP) test in Chinese this spring. A 2004 survey that found that about 2,400 high schools wanted to offer AP classes in Chinese.

"That was quite unexpected," said Selena Cantor, the College Board's director of Chinese language and culture.

Teacher mistreating student in the classroom

In Milan, Italy, February 20, the newspaper headlines reported the horrible incident of a Milan school teacher brutally cutting a young Tunesian-Italian boys tongue with a scissors. The boy required five stitches in the hospital emergency room. Since then the Marco Ghezzi, the prosecutor in Milan working on the case, has made strong effort to start legal proceedings against the former teacher.

How can any teacher want to bring bodily harm on a young child? Since the incident, all sorts of versions have appeared in the media, that is, the teacher is trying to find ways to cover up her actions.

Crimson Falls

So we consider 2004 as the real start for Crimson Falls. With this line-up we wrote, recorded and released our debut mcd Ruins 2K5 by ourselves. This cd helped us to build up our name in the metal and hardcore scene.

Are there really that many rivers in Belgium?

Actually there are. Theres a lot of water in Belgium through rivers and pools but that didnt influence the choice for our bandname.

Is there a story involving bloody rivers behind the band name?

We choose that name because it sounded cool and the meaning, which is bloodred (bloody) waterfalls, was a cool image for us. So, afterwards we gave the bandname more meaning. Kristof wrote the text Behold The Crimson Falls ( which is a song on our MCD ruins 2k5) and that text gives a good impression of what the Crimson Falls stands for.

I sing in a Gaelic choir

Press Packer Rachel sings in a Gaelic choir and in her report she tells us why learning the Gaelic language is important to her.

"I go to Gaelic choir practice.

Gaelic is a language that was spoken in the Hebrides in Scotland.

It is a very old language and it is dying out.

Tricky words

In the choir you normally get a Gaelic teacher and a music teacher.

It can be tricky to learn your words but in the end it is worth it!

I think that if more people learn Gaelic it won't die out.

Family connection

It is a lovely language and also it is part of my family on my dad's side.

My gran is from Lochboisdale, Uist.

She lived there until she was in her late teens and then moved to Oban where she met my granddad - she lives there now too!

More choirs

I think it is important for people to learn Gaelic.
