United TV & Stereo celebrates 40 years downtown

For Chris Graham at United TV & Stereo, it means his store has needed a complete remodelling, as the old deep-back televisions more or less disappear and the bigger flat-screens take over.

For good measure, he's also giving the outside of his premises at 243 Division Street in Cobourg a bit of a make-over. And just to show how far things have come, Mr. Graham keeps a couple of the really old models in a corner at the back of the showroom.

These are the sets he was referring to in a local radio commercial he made some years back, when he said, "You probably bought your first TV here."

It's the only business he has ever known, Mr. Graham admitted. He left school at the age of 14 and went right into electronics. When he opened his store, in fact, it was a TV- and radio-repair shop for its first two years.

Study suggests drug-resistant strains of influenza B can spread

Apr 13, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – Japanese researchers who identified antiviral-resistant strains of influenza B found that they seemed to circulate in communities and families and to make patients just as sick as their nonresistant counterparts did, contrary to a common assumption that resistant flu viruses are likely to be less transmissible and less virulent.

The report in the Apr 4 Journal of the American Medical Association says that strains with reduced drug sensitivity "appear to be transmitted from person to person" and that the clinical course of influenza B infection "did not appear to be affected by the sensitivity of the virus to neuraminidase inhibitors," though the sample size was small.

Other researchers have documented antiviral-resistant strains of the (influenza A) H5N1 avian flu virus in Egypt and Vietnam, and with the threat of an influenza pandemic in mind, disease experts are eager to learn more about how flu viruses evolve in response to antiviral medications.

Thai censors want 'Syndrome' snips

BANGKOK -- Thai censors have demanded that three scenes be cut from arthouse pic "Syndromes and a Century" before it's allowed for theatrical release on Thursday.

Move has stunned producers and local cinephiles and raised further questions about a moral crackdown under the country's military-backed government.

Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, "Syndromes" preemed in competition at last September's Venice Film Festival and has since collected awards on the fest circuit. It is a Thai-French-Austrian co-production commissioned as part of the New Crowned Hope series celebrating the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth.

Controversial scenes in the movie about the memories of two doctors include an image of a young monk casually strumming a guitar; a scene of four doctors drinking whisky in a hospital storeroom; and a scene of a male doctor kissing his girlfriend in the hospital's locker room.
