International comparisons of eighth grade science teaching practices demonstrate that high achieving countries consistently link science learning activities to strong concept development. Yet, in U.S. classrooms, science lessons are often characterized by a variety of activities that may engage students in science work but do not necessarily connect to the development of science content ideas.(1) To help teachers better connect hands-on inquiry-based learning to the development of science content understanding, Pearson Achievement Solutions today introduces Enhancing Instruction in Science (EIS). Designed for science teachers in grades two through eight, EIS is a professional development program that helps teachers work with their students to draw coherent connections between classroom content and activities and larger conceptual ideas about science.
Rock Band promises Pop Idol for the Online Age
THE STUDIO behind classic rocker Guitar Hero has revealed the premise of its next musical title, Rock Band. Published by EA, Harmonix (now owned by MTV, itself a Viacom company) will allow four players to sing, strum and beat their way to worldwide rock stardom - by playing along to pop songs with plastic instruments. Online play is likely, with gamers able to create a virtual band across the world, rather than having to have all their bandmates together in the living room. Wannabes will be able to play lead and bass guitar, drums, or sing. Given the massive success of Guitar Hero 1 and 2, as well as other music titles such as SingStar and Dance Dance Revolution, music publishers have been queueing up to get their music in front of a 'new' audience, with EMI, Hollywood, Universal, Warner and Sony all agreeing to license tracks for the game.
Where grieving parents can learn to laugh again
`It helps knowing you're not the only one walking the journey' The close-knit group of friends finishes each other's sentences, laughs at each other's jokes. There's Sarah McPeek, poking fun at herself and encouraging others to join in, when she lugged a box full of pictures of her son after being asked to bring just one. When Kevin Howard opens his mouth to answer a question, the women jump in. He jokes how his voice inexplicably got higher. As comfortable as they are, they are members of a club who wish they'd met another way. They're part of Compassionate Friends of Charlotte, a branch of a national support group for parents who have experienced the death of a child. The group meets monthly in Ballantyne. Come if you want to talk, or if you're not ready to say a word.
Chinese course offers culture and language
One out of every five people in the world lives in China. Now, PJC students have the opportunity to learn about the Chinese culture and language. Beginning Chinese I will focus primarily on the official Chinese language - Mandarin. English Professor Guangpeng Zeng, will teach the class this fall semester. Chinese I is a four credit hour class and meets the foreign language requirement. "Learning Chinese can enhance your career by working and/or traveling abroad and can open doors to new, interesting jobs such as a foreign language translator or a teacher of English as a second language in Chinese-speaking countries," Zeng said. The Chinese language might intimidate some students, especially the reading and writing aspect. "The language does appear complex and difficult," Zeng said.
NATIONAL POETRY MONTH: Celebrate Along with Us
In 2006, Huntington News Network participated in the Knopf Poetry Month Celebration -- April is National Poetry Month -- by presenting a poem every day through April 30. We continue that new tradition for 2007, courtesy of the fine folks at Knopf Publicity. -- David M. Kinchen, Editor, Huntington News Network * * * From Knopf: Emma Lazarus, whose words give voice to the Statue of Liberty and are now inseparable from it in our collective imagination ('Give me your tired, your poor, / your huddled masses struggling to breathe free'), did not know in her lifetime that the poem 'The New Colossus' would appear at that site, memorializing her avid interest during her short lifetime in the cause of rehabilitating refugees. (She was born in 1849 and died in 1887.) As we learn in Esther Schor's groundbreaking and highly readable biography, Emma Lazarus, the daughter of a wealthy Sephardic Jewish family established in New York in the colonial period, was ahead of her time in many respects.
Random Thoughts from Notre Dame's 78th Annual Blue-Gold Spring Game
* While the onus Saturday was obviously to see how the four quarterbacks performed, a less-appreciated part of the offense over the past few seasons was on full display, the rushing attack. One of the reasons the quarterback play could not be dissected and examined to the most minute detail was the fact that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wanted to showcase the rushing ability of his young but talented team."One of the main things I wanted to come out here in the spring was establish a toughness on the offense that I think we've started to get away from a little bit," Weis said. "That's why I want to see a heavy dose of running."For the game, the teams combined to call 25 passing plays and 54 running plays. A myriad of runs were utilized. From draws and off-tackle plays with James Aldridge and Travis Thomas to bruising runs up the middle by Asaph Schwapp.
All that song and DANCE
Mumbai, April 7: Salsa is still hip and happening while belly dancing is bringing out the sleeping Shakiras in Mumbai belles. But this dance-crazy city wants more. As fish take to water, Mumbaikars have embraced a various dance formsfrom the evergreen waltz, jive and rock n roll to hip hop and jazz, as well as new age flab fighters zumba, capoeira and pole dancing. If dance pundits are to be believed, exposure to various dance forms has only compounded this mania. With studios abounding, learning dance is suddenly all the rage. Dancing has spun a wide net of interest in people. And the reasons seem to be as varied as the dance forms on offer, says Aanchal Gupta of Arts in Motion. We get queries from even 50-plus people who want to learn dancing so that they can have a good time at parties.
