There's nothing routine about life with the Duquesne Tamburitzans

In the hour before curtain time at Slippery Rock University, a couple of Duquesne University Tamburitzans are doing some fancy slip-sliding of their own: Petite Pittsburgh resident Nikki Bott, a freshman pharmacy major, and junior Brittany Malik, a blonde-haired forensics-science major from Bridgeville, jump high in the air, land on the stage on their padded knees and gracefully make what are called "Georgian turns" on the hardwood floor.

The elaborate moves are highlights of the group's energetic folk tribute to the former Soviet republic.

Later, the curtain rises on a rousing scene out of old Croatia, the female students clad in elaborately embroidered dresses with red aprons and plaid shawls, the men in white pants with black sashes, vests and hats. "Adjemo! U Kolo!" or "Let's Go to the Kolo!" they sing phonetically in Croatian through youthful smiles, as student musicians play a traditional folk accompaniment.

The Infiltration of Knox College: The College Experience of Super ...

Sept. 13, 1962 was a sweltering day for freshmen to cart boxes and bags into the dorms of Knox College. With a high of 91 degrees Fahrenheit and only traces of clouds, families went through the typical rigmarole of meeting roommates, dorm mates, and extending firm handshakes as greetings. Raub Hall was crowded during the unpacking process, and even though there were only about a dozen students in Robert Hanssen's second floor suite, the heat affected everyone.

In Elaine Shannon and Ann Blackman's book The Spy Next Door, former dorm mate Tom Kozel notes, "My mother recalls that when it was time for Bob's parents to leave, he did not want them to go"—a strange observation given what we know about Hanssen's family life.

Overly critical, Howard Hanssen, Robert's father, often went to great lengths to ensure his son would not become too proud of himself, according to Shannon and Blackman's book.

• Neal Morse

Neal Morse made headlines when he left his critically acclaimed band, Spock's Beard, after he had a religious conversion. His first solo album Testimony (2003) told the story of his journey to faith. Since then, he has explored theological themes through a series of concept albums. His latest, Sola Scriptura, tells the story of Luther's stand against the Catholic Church. It has sold faster than any of his previous solo works, but also has drawn criticism for its portrayal of Catholicism. Morse's rejection of the Trinitarian view of God also has raised questions about the orthodoxy of his beliefs. He says they're based solely on his interpretation of Scripture (sola scriptura), but admits that his views on the Council of Nicaea were shaped in part by a special on The History Channel. We caught up with Morse recently to ask about these issues and more—including why he thinks prog rock is the best way to express his spiritual journey.

Early literacy is most important, teachers explain

Many Catholic elementary schools in the Vancouver Archdiocese are planning Open House events for parents of 3- and 4-year-old children through the Ready, Set, Learn and the Early Learners programs, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. This initiative is intended to build on the many reading activities that are already happening in B.C.'s families and communities.

The program offers information about the typical development of pre-Kindergarten children, including tips for supporting children's learning in key areas of development. Concrete ideas how parents can help preschoolers develop their literacy skills are offered and take-home materials are provided.

The primary teachers at Our Lady of Assumption Elementary School in Port Coquitlam are planning to meet and collaborate with parents to develop the early literacy of their children.
