Alterkicks chat to I Like Music
Alterkicks closed 2006 following support slots with Larrikin Love and The Automatic which saw the band gather a host of new fans. Debut single for B-Unique, "On A Holiday", saw praise from NME for a "rollicking stomp". The very end of the year saw Rocksound predict big things for the band as part of their Hot One Hundred for 2007, noting that "their wayward guitar pop has a way of getting inside your head". Having kicked of 2007 with a headline tour; a date on the NME Awards shows, and a new single, Good Luck, the band have started as they mean to go on. We caught up with Martin from Alterkicks to talk about the new single and album, touring with Larrikin Love and The Automatic, and the power of music. "I Like Music because it stops me from worrying." MARTIN, ALTERKICKS ILM: Your debut album is due out soon.
Kazakh leader urges nation to speak Russian
ASTANA: Kazakh leader Nursultan Nazarbayev has criticised his former Soviet nation for growing disrespect for the Russian language. Nazarbayevs remarks were in sharp contrast to a broader trend among Central Asian leaders seeking to stop the lingering dominance of the Russian language. I think its a great blessing that Kazakhs speak Russian so well - better than some Russians, Nazarbayev said at a meeting with young scientists late on Tuesday. Some of our people, intelligentsia, criticise that we use Russian so much ... The more languages you know the more cultured you become, he said. Turkic-speaking Kazakhs were forced to learn Russian during Russian imperial rule and later under Soviet power. But since independence in 1991, the Central Asian state has sought to revive the Kazakh language as a symbol of national identity.

Islam and Human Rights
The paper examines whether human rights concepts are applicable to Islam or not. It provides a comparative study of the popular perceptions of Islam versus the West, and argues that with a correct understanding of the Koran and Islamic teachings it is possible to defend human rights concepts from inside the Islamic texts. It also argues that most Western views of Islam are due to insufficient understanding of Islam and often based on political considerations, rather than on what Islam stands for. The long history of Islam's peaceful coexistence and interaction with other cultures and civilisations proves that the theory of a 'clash of civilisations' is wrong, and it is possible to establish real dialogue and understanding with Muslims. War is the greatest scourge of our time.
North Korea's Teenage Defectors Face Huge Challenges
SEOUL - Teenage North Korean defectors may have escaped starvation and repression, but they have a hard time playing catch-up with their South Korean peers once they resettle, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports. "If they're well-fed now, it doesn't mean that the physical and mental effects of years of deprivation and starvation in North Korea have disappeared," said Ma Seok Hoon, executive director of the Bridges Society, a non-governmental group that looks after North Korean teenagers in the South. "The side effects of starvation are long-lasting, and many of these kids are still experiencing serious gastrointestinal problems. Some of the girls suffer from gynecological disorders, and many of the youngsters experience an inferiority complex because of their slight physique," Ma told RFA's Korean service.
