| Norton's dramatic walk-off lifts UM
Sunday, with the bases loaded and the University of Maine baseball team trailing by one in extra innings, senior pitching ace Greg Norton sent an inside fastball off the leftfield fence for a walk-off double. The smash, which nearly left the park, not only concluded a ridiculously up-and-down affair at Mahaney Diamond that saw the Black Bears win 6-5, but also came in Norton's first at-bat in a UMaine uniform after five years with the team. "That was the highlight of my career; I don't ever want to hit again," said a clearly elated and shocked Norton. "I want to bat a 1.000 for my college career." The moment was a dramatic signoff for the Black Bears' Sunday doubleheader - they lost 6-4 in the first game - that featured a few too many errors, plenty of funky bounces and an assortment of one-of-a-kind occurrences.
Beer tasting club getting ahead
Ray McHendry certainly understood the social hours his wife and her friends would keep after regular Lafayette-Lamont Parent-Teacher Organization meetings. But something was missing. "I thought if they have a PTO, why can't we have a BTO?" McHendry said. And with that, the Bound Brook chapter of the Beer Tasting Organization was founded. No, this would not be an event where you lift a pinky in the air while raising your glass. It would be a monthly occasion for friends to search for and savor something a little more adventurous than the average beer. And, of course, it didn't take very long before this boy's club opened up to the better half. "I told Ray that unless you invite the ladies, you're not going to get anybody to come," said McHendry's wife, Hayley.

Veterans group invites CNMI to reunion
A veterans group whose members saw action on Saipan during World War II has extended an invitation for the CNMI to join their annual reunion in Cincinnati next month. The 73rd Bomb Wing Association has invited Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez to be the featured speaker at their banquet on May 4, 2007. "We are deeply privileged to have the Honorable Timothy P. Villagomez, Lt. Governor the Northern Mariana Islands, as guest speaker for our 32rd reunion," the association announced to members in their newsletter Saipan Superfort. "The opportunity to learn more about Saipan and revisit some of our experiences will be very meaningful to all of us."At the start of World War II, Saipan and Tinian were under Japanese administration. Thousands of American and Japanese lives were lost during the capture of the islands that provided bases for the B-29s and crews that were instrumental in defeating the Japanese.
