Times New Roman

Jennifer Aniston was famously cast against type in White's "The Good Girl" (2002), about a shiftless small-town cashier, and his "The School of Rock" (2003), which had Jack Black leading a team of preteen musicians, achieved broad success. White also has writing credits on "Nacho Libre" (2006) and "Orange County" (2002). Even when he's worked in television, it's been with an idiosyncratic eye -- he's written for the beloved "Freaks and Geeks," the short-lived "Pasadena" and the even shorter-lived "Cracking Up."

"Year of the Dog," which stars Molly Shannon as a loving dog owner who becomes unhinged after the death of her pet, Pencil, is the first film White has directed.

"I had postponed it because I thought it would be so stressful to be the director," White says, affecting a slight German accent.

Language school seeks uniformity

The University of Cincinnati's language instructors have come together under a single organizational umbrella, creating a new school known as "The School of World Languages and Cultures."

The organizational change occurred so language instructors and faculty would have a systematic means of communicating with each other, according to Lowanne Jones, director and department head of Romance Languages.

Standardization problems that occurred regarding the way classes were named are now simplified and have been made more uniform in the One Stop class offerings to help advisors and students navigate the process of choosing the right classes.

The faculty also is working on ways of improving the education and expanding the breadth of classes offered to students.

How to encourage creativity in your child

Use your childs interests Figure out what interests your child even on an unconscious level. What colors does he like? What does he collect? What are the constant themes of his life? Use what he likes as the basis for an art project. It takes some thinking: Does he love cars and like to draw? Make a map together of a town with roads for his toy cars. Is he an outdoors-lover? Make a miniature clay campsite. Whether you have a hesitant artist or a kid who already loves art, he can benefit from your thoughtful direction on occasional projects. Heres where you have the advantage over art teachers: You see your child up close every day, says Webb. So you will notice what interests your child before the art teacher does. Art is meant to be messy Art requires a totally different psychological attitude for children who have heard Dont spill since they were born.

A's fans love their 'scrappy grinders'

"And that's what America is all about," said Moody, 49, a business owner who drove west from El Dorado Hills (El Dorado County) Monday to see his team play the White Sox. "Getting the most out of the least, going from the cellar to the top of the heap. The way they do it is the right way."

Moody and other fans said they liked the team's reliance on younger and thus cheaper players, like Nick Swisher, who came up through the organization's farm system. While some said they wished the A's wouldn't lose so many players once they become stars, they called it an acceptable reality.

"That's a big reason why a lot of A's fans love this team," said Geoff Lee, a 30-year-old paralegal from Alameda who arrived seven hours before the game with two friends to barbecue pork chops and hot links.

SEPULTURA Guitarist KISSER To Play Two Gigs With His 'First Band ...

"I'm going to do two gigs with old time friends, my first band ever, ESFINGE (SPHINX). We started in 1983, we all studied in the same school and had the same musical taste. We played from TWISTED SISTER to VENOM. It was a great way to learn the guitar and we had a great deal of fun. We performed everywhere, birthday parties, schools, carwash parties, etc....great memories."

SEPULTURA recently finished filming the second video from their "Dante XXI" album, for the song "Ostia". The clip was shot on March 3 at a studio in São Paulo prior to the band's departure for their European tour. During the following week, the video crew and the main actor shot the outdoor scenes in downtown São Paulo. The script, which adapts the story from the book "The Divine Comedy" to the modern days, was directed by Geraldo Moraes.

He's on a mission to raise awareness

Maybe if they understood what autism is, what it's like for kids like him who have it, maybe they won't pick on him anymore. Maybe he'd make new friends. Maybe others would treat him like a regular kid.

I'd tell them I'm one of the kids with autism and sometimes kids with autism get picked on, Teddy explained recently in his family's Newtown Township kitchen. It's not their fault; it's just because they have autism.

The fifth-grader asked his mom about talking about autism at his school, Goodnoe Elementary. He thought April would be the perfect time since its autism awareness month.

What an awesome idea, Irene Willis told her son. After all, when Teddy spoke about his disability in his social skills class in February, he made a new friend. He also wrote about his autism for a school report.
