| David Shapiro: Market watcher, Sasfin
MONEYWEB: Hello, good evening, and welcome to the Moneyweb Power Hour. I'm Alec Hogg. It's my great pleasure to be your host right here on Radio 2000 nationwide every day at this time, between six and seven. Well, we're going across to Russia tonight. Evraz has made an investment in Highveld Steel. It could turn out to be something like R8.5bn. We're waiting on the Competition Tribunal to give the thumbs-up to something which is pretty much a done deal, but we will be talking to a lady from Moscow, the one and only Irina Kibina - remember her? Hubba-hubba! Sometimes I wish it was television. Man, you should have seen David! DAVID SHAPIRO: I've got to say one thing though, Chris is much better dressed than Irina was. MONEYWEB: Oh, we've got Chris in the studio.
Magic and Consciousness
The Assn for the Scientific Study of Consciousness announced their 2007 conference, June 22-25. It's being held at the Imperial Palace hotel on the Las Vegas strip, and features a special symposium on The Magic of Consciousness with five top magicians performing and discussing their trade. Just as visual scientists study visual art and illusions to elucidate the workings of the visual system, so too can cognitive scientists study artists of cognitive illusions to elucidate the underpinnings of cognition. Stage magic shows are the manifestation of the deep intuition and understanding of human attention and awareness held by the accomplished magical performer. By studying magicians, and learning their techniques, researchers can hope to learn the skills necessary to manipulate attention and awareness in the lab, at a quantitative level.
For Braddigan, life after the break-up
While he hasn't quite dropped the "of Dispatch" label from his namesake, singer/songwriter Braddigan, one the three former members of independent roots-rockers Dispatch, is proof there's life after a breakup. When Dispatch disbanded with a free farewell concert - with an estimated 100,000 fans in attendance - at Boston's Hatch Shell in 2004, it was supposed to be the end for the trio. But now, three years later, the band will reunite from July 13 through the 15 for three sold-out benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York. Before he dusts off his Dispatch drum kit, however, Braddigan will finish an East Coast tour this month. For Braddigan, the Jammin' Java where he and his band play tonight - has become a second home, he said. "It's amazing," Braddigan said of the 182-capacity coffee-shop/music venue in Vienna, Va.
big thoughts on Wikipedia
Wikipedia is not only one of the world's biggest and most cited websites, but also probably the internet's most daring project. It's an encyclopedia that is a wiki, meaning anyone can edit and change any entry, and it relies on a system of trust, honesty, moderation and regulation from the readers themselves. Matthew Buckland, with some help from the South African blogosphere, posed some tough questions to Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, who is in South Africa for the Creative Commons Digital Freedom Expo. This interview will also later be available here as a podcast and video.I'll start with a question I'll bet you've never answered before: Why did you start Wikipedia and what was the thinking behind it?That's a difficult question to answer because I've never heard that one before ...
Dance Alloy's 'Fragile' often takes flight
The fluidity of Marshall's piece is extends beyond her use of the arms and upper body -- which is the inverse of Irish step dancing where the action is all below the waist. Roles reverse impressively in the choreographer's piece, as the two characters need support at different times. And gestures receive different responses at different times in this compact masterpiece. .
