| No reason schools can't expect success from poor children
One of the big questions facing American education is, "Can it be done?" Is it possible for schools to help all children -- even those considered "difficult to teach" -- learn to read, write, compute and generally become educated citizens? By now it has become almost a truism that high-poverty, high-minority schools are low-achieving, and that even in diverse schools most poor children and children of color are doomed to low achievement. An entire industry has grown up to reassure teachers and administrators that the dismal results they get are the only results that could be expected, and that only the misguided would demand anything different. But that isn't the end of the story. About two years ago, I spoke to a very accomplished principal, Mary Russo, of the K-8 Richard T.
Veterans group invites CNMI to reunion
A veterans group whose members saw action on Saipan during World War II has extended an invitation for the CNMI to join their annual reunion in Cincinnati next month. The 73rd Bomb Wing Association has invited Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez to be the featured speaker at their banquet on May 4, 2007. "We are deeply privileged to have the Honorable Timothy P. Villagomez, Lt. Governor the Northern Mariana Islands, as guest speaker for our 32rd reunion," the association announced to members in their newsletter Saipan Superfort. "The opportunity to learn more about Saipan and revisit some of our experiences will be very meaningful to all of us."At the start of World War II, Saipan and Tinian were under Japanese administration. Thousands of American and Japanese lives were lost during the capture of the islands that provided bases for the B-29s and crews that were instrumental in defeating the Japanese.
Jinki: Extend. 01
Aoba Tsuzaki is a regular thirteen year old girl, or so she always thought. Ever since she was little shes had a fascination with craft modelling, in particular piecing together and painting robot figurines. Little did she realise that a day would come when shed find herself face to face with the real thing. When shes kidnapped by a man in drag she finds herself being whisked away to a remote location situated in the Venezuelan jungles. She manages to flee at first, but after making her escape she runs into a nearby base which is overseeing maintenance on a giant fighting machine known as the Moribito. Excited by its presence she momentarily forgets that two men are hot on her trail and when they turn up she seeks shelter in the Moribito. However, the robot is called to fight a nearby enemy and it turns out that the two men who took her out of Tokyo are in fact the pilots of this behemoth.
18:55 Wii Guitar Hero III to feature online content (0)
At one point it looked as if arguably the best rhythm-based videogame of all time was going to bypass Nintendo Wii owners. After the success of the original and its sequel on the PlayStation 2, Guitar Hero leapt straight over to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and thrashed out a successful gig there. Finally, in February this year, publisher Activision announced it would be stepping up its support for the Wii, including a version of Guitar Hero III – and now we learn today, with added online functionality! In an interview with IGN, RedOctane's (co-publisher of Guitar Hero with Activision) co-founder and president Kai Huang confirmed that Guitar Hero III on Wii uses a guitar peripheral and will include online elements: We are really excited about the Wii game because there are so many options for the Wii remote.
KRISTIN HERSH "Learn to Sing Like a Star" Yep Roc DOLOREAN "You ...
"IF YOU LIVED HERE / You'd be home now / And suicidal," warns Kristin Hersh on "Learn to Sing Like a Star," her first album for Yep Roc. The former Throwing Muse has always had a taste for the dramatic, and though she no longer records for 4AD, she hasn't forsaken that label's goth-folk sensibility. In fact, this self-produced disc is her most atmospheric solo outing, with swooping strings and rasping guitars parrying her voice, whose multi-tracked cooing sometimes mingles with a growl. It doesn't always work, and a trio of fragmentary instrumentals, one playfully titled "Christian Hearse," are mere stalling actions. But this album's fidgety arrangements befit such emotionally frazzled material as "Nerve Endings" and "Vertigo" better than the simple guitar-and-voice mode of her previous solo albums.
Journalists Travel As Pilgrims To Holy Land Sites
ISRAEL—Descend from the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem on the “Passover Walk," the route Jesus took to enter the city before He was crucified, and meditate in the Garden of Gethsemane by the ancient, gnarled olive trees where Jesus anguished before his arrest. Then prayerfully walk the Stations of the Cross up the streets of the Old City along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher where the Lord was buried, almost hearing the jeers of the crowd and contemplating Christ's exhaustion and pain. Nearby, experience the devotion of pilgrims and Israelis as they pray, study Scripture and wedge paper slips with prayers into crevices of the holiest existing shrine in Judaism, the Western Wall. Behold above it where once stood the Second Jewish Temple, the golden Dome of the Rock, the mosque where Muslims believe the prophet Mohammad ascended into heaven.
High Functioning Autism: Do you know what it feels like to be ...
If we continue to simply say that this kid is just a monster, we will be enabling other "monster" kids to commit future heinous acts of violence. This is why we, and the media, and the politicians, can not turn away. This is why we have to look at Cho Seung-Hui, read his manifesto, look at his video and study his sad history of being bullied, and of having untreated illnesses. There is so much that we need to learn from this unfathomable insanity. It is safe to say that we have behaved horribly with regard to mental illness and developmental disorders in this country. I draw a lesson from the horrific slaughter at Virginia Tech. There were so many extreme warning signals - a cry for help - from this tormented young man for so many years. What I am about to write will cause much hate mail from the Autistic Community.
