Want to play like Hendrix? Guitar World, DVD reveal a few secrets

Guitarists have been copying Jimi Hendrix for decades. Now they can learn some of the legendary rocker's work note for note.

Guitar World magazine will release a special 16-page Hendrix tribute and an instructional DVD that shows how to play each memorable note and string-bending lick on his classic 1967 album, "Axis: Bold As Love." The DVD-magazine package hits newsstands Tuesday.

"Not only are you going to learn some of Jimi Hendrix's greatest licks," the magazine's editor-in-chief, Brad Tolinski, says on the DVD's introduction, "but we also hope to provide you with a little bit of history on the making of `Axis: Bold As Love,' as well as some insight into his creative musical genius."

The magazine tribute includes a complete biography of the guitarist and replicas of concert posters.

Teach babies to sign

Parents who would like to communicate better with their babies before they learn to talk should consider attending a baby signing workshop this week.

The free workshops are being held today from 3 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Chinook Yoga Studio, 1717 Third Ave. Room 116.

Baby sign language is simply a way of expanding the natural gestures that babies use, such as waving goodbye, pointing and reaching to be picked up.

The advantages of signing is that babies are able to use signs to tell you what they want long before they can use words, said Clodagh LeRoy, who uses song, story time and play in teaching.

"Children who used signs as babies are found to have better vocabularies and language skills," said LeRoy, who can be contacted at 563-6258 or by Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Miranda S-250 Travel Guitar

From an early age, I wanted to learn to play the guitar. I took a few lessons here and there through the years, but for the most part taught myself from books and tapes. I never was a very good player, but that hasn't stopped my love of the instrument and music. I've had several guitars, from electric to acoustic, to even a mini electric that I built myself using a kit. I even had a dial up BBS back in the day completely devoted to TAB (tablature files) that was named CrossRoads BBS.

I haven't made time to play for years and years, but just recently decided to try to revive the desire. What better way to do that, then to buy a new guitar! I didn't want or need another regular acoustic since I already have a very nice small bodied Collings. I didn't want an electric because I don't have an amp.

OXFORD - High school rising juniors and seniors will get a chance to learn Chinese this summer through a month-long University of Mississippi language course.

The StarTalk program is one of more than a dozen programs in the National Security Language Initiative announced by President Bush in 2006.

It's a national security and global competition issue, says Catherine Ingold, director of the University of Maryland's National Foreign Language Center.

"This is a vital experiment because we need to start teaching critical languages like Arabic and Chinese much earlier in life, if the nation is to develop the skills needed for national security and economic competitiveness," Ingold noted.
