Coaching changes make Van Zant better on the field

Martel Van Zant, a fan favorite since his arrival on campus in 2004, has overcome more than being hearing impaired while being a Division I athlete. He has also had to learn three complex defenses in four years since he has arrived. Van Zant is going into his fourth and final year as a Cowboy cornerback and will play for his third defensive coordinator this coming season with Tim Beckman recently named as OSUs defensive coordinator. When we had Coach (Bill) Clay, he was easy to understand, but made us work hard, Van Zant said. Then we got Coach (Vance) Bedford. It was a little bit easier defense to understand, but now that we got Coach Beckman, hes got words for everything. That makes it easier for me to understand, when we have words instead of numbers for plays; the defense seems to understand it a little more.

Miranda S-250 Travel Guitar

From an early age, I wanted to learn to play the guitar. I took a few lessons here and there through the years, but for the most part taught myself from books and tapes. I never was a very good player, but that hasn't stopped my love of the instrument and music. I've had several guitars, from electric to acoustic, to even a mini electric that I built myself using a kit. I even had a dial up BBS back in the day completely devoted to TAB (tablature files) that was named CrossRoads BBS.

I haven't made time to play for years and years, but just recently decided to try to revive the desire. What better way to do that, then to buy a new guitar! I didn't want or need another regular acoustic since I already have a very nice small bodied Collings. I didn't want an electric because I don't have an amp.

Pole position: Forget the shady image - women say this dance is ...

RALEIGH, N.C. - Sonya Bruton likes her latest exercise routine because it gives her something in common with her 10-year-old: a chance to learn something new.

"You forget what kids have to go through to learn things," says Bruton, who is 39 and, in addition to her job as executive director of the N.C. Community Health Center Association, finds time to teach cardio funk, cycling and body sculpting. "Some things have to come in stages."

It may seem odd, though, that the pursuit that lets Bruton connect with her child is a mainstay of men's clubs worldwide: pole dancing.

But it's not sex that the three-month-old Aradia Fitness Center in Cary, N.C., is selling. It's a brand of feminism.

"We provide a place for women to come and feel good about themselves, to develop their self-esteem," says Terri Kerr, owner of Aradia, a dance studio specializing in sensuous dance centered on a floor-to-ceiling brass pole two inches in diameter.

Winery Tasting Rooms: Trick or Treat?

"Free wine!" you might think, driving up to the tasting room of a winery in Napa, Sonoma, the San Ynez Valley, or even Long Island. You might have been correct in the seventies and eighties before Americans discovered the French Paradox, the film Sideways, and developed a more sophisticated palate.

"Many people never had a glass of wine until they walked into this restaurant," Charlie Palmer told me just after the opening of Aureole in Las Vegas with its gigantic glass wine tower, designed by Architect Adam Tihany after watching Tom Cruise in the film Mission Impossible. That was in 1999.

Now that wine has entered pop culture and visiting tasting rooms are considered a cool weekend activity, winemakers no longer have to give away free samples to attract potential customers.

To Jerry Landay, a picture's worth 1000 words

BRISTOL - Bristol resident Jerry Landay, 77, had a long and notable career as a journalist, serving as a news correspondent for ABC and CBS, as well as the Group W (Westinghouse) radio stations. Many of his CBS assignments were seen on "Sunday Morning," a news program formerly hosted by the late Charles Kuralt of "On The Road" fame.

Now retired and living in Bristol, he is an outspoken member of the community and has recently been involved in the fight to keep LNG tankers out of Narragansett and Mt. Hope bays, and is an advocate of wind power. Between causes, he recently found time to take up another skill journalists are known for: Photography. Starting today (Thursday) and running xx, many of his original pieces will be on display at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, alongside works by many other local artists.
